Frequently asked questions

How is this different from chatting with my PDFs? A chat answers; Underanchor keeps the proof. Every sentence of your document stays linked to the exact paragraph that supports it, and anyone can check it in one click. Unsupported sentences are flagged, not filled in.

Can I use my project in another LaTeX editor? Yes. The .tex is standard LaTeX and anchors live in a separate file: Export .zip and it compiles elsewhere untouched. You can also bring a project in with Import project (.zip).

I use Zotero. Do I have to upload everything again? No: Import from Zotero, with your account or an exported file. See Libraries and PDFs.

Who can see my PDFs? Only you. Your library is private. A reviewer you invite, or anyone with a provenance report link, sees only the paragraphs you cite.

Does Underanchor read my text with an AI? No. It never calls an AI model. Only the AI you connect yourself (your Claude or ChatGPT) reads what you ask it to.

Can I use scanned PDFs? Yes, when the server has OCR (it does in the hosted service). Pages without a text layer are read with OCR (English and Spanish) and keep their exact position, so citations still point to the real place. OCR can make typos, so the import message says how many pages were read that way, and a scan that is too hard to read (for example handwriting) is rejected instead of filled with wrong text. It is slower than a normal PDF: several seconds per page.

My text is in Spanish and the papers in English. Does search work? Yes: search combines words and meaning, so a Spanish question can find an English paragraph (it is not perfect: a query in the language of the papers is still the most precise). Your AI also reformulates for you through the connector. Results found only by meaning carry a similarity score; a low one is a weak match, not proof.

Why does my AI sometimes show only part of a paragraph? To save tokens, search results come as the sentences that best answer the question, word for word, with “…” where text is left out (the result is marked truncated). The whole paragraph is one step away: the AI asks for it when it needs figures or context. Nothing is paraphrased or summarised.

Does it capture formulas? Yes. Each display equation (with its number) is one citable unit with its exact box in the PDF, so you can anchor a sentence to it and clicking the citation highlights the formula. The text extracted from a formula is raw (loose symbols), so your AI reads it as an image through the connector and can write it in LaTeX. PDFs uploaded before this feature need to be imported again to get their formulas.

What is the Marketplace? It is locked: it will come after launch.
